This Earth Day, the call to care for our planet is being answered by a powerful force: youth.
Through DIVERSEcity’s Youth for People and the Planet program, young people are not only learning about sustainability — they are actively shaping it. Designed for youth aged 15–30, the program supports participants in developing community-based projects that respond to environmental and social challenges, from climate awareness to local stewardship.
Over the course of the program, youth gain leadership skills, mentorship and hands-on experience bringing their ideas to life. With access to micro-grants, they are empowered to take action in ways that are both meaningful and measurable — creating ripple effects within their communities.
“I hope that I can continue to use the skills that I’ve learned in this program to keep growing as a person,” Chanrose, 17, reflects, “in sustainability and environmental justice — connecting with my community and building bridges that lead to small and larger changes in the environment.”
Her words speak to a broader movement. Youth are not waiting for change — they are leading it. Whether through environmental education, community initiatives or advocacy, they are moving the needle on sustainability and redefining what stewardship looks like in action.
What stands out is the sense of ownership. These young leaders are stepping forward with intention, grounded in their lived experiences and a shared commitment to a more sustainable future.
This Earth Day, their work reminds us that caring for the planet starts at the community level — and that even small actions, when led with purpose, can grow into lasting impact.
