DIVERSEcity Stories: Terry Christy’s progress toward her goal of returning to a legal career is built step by step with DIVERSEcity’s help
When Terry Christy arrived in Canada, she brought with her years of experience in the legal field, but no clear path to continue that career.
“Here I had nothing. No Canadian experience, no local education and I had no idea where to start. I applied to so many jobs and never heard back from anyone. It was really discouraging,” she says.
The turning point came for Terry when she found DIVERSEcity’s Future Leaders program.
With guidance and encouragement from the program’s employment specialists, Rosa and Solmaz, Terry began to rebuild both her confidence and direction. She strengthened her resumé and cover letter, developed a better understanding of the Canadian job market and gained practical certifications like First Aid to help her move forward.
Soon, that preparation led to her first opportunity: a position as a dietary aide/server in a retirement home. It was a meaningful step not just into employment, but into a new sense of possibility. From there, Terry continued to grow her experience, which opened the door for her to move into a receptionist role.
Returning to the legal field
Still, Terry’s ultimate goal of getting back into the legal field never faltered.
With support from DIVERSEcity, Terry is now completing her first semester in the Legal Administrative Assistant program at Capilano University. Through the Future Leaders program, she has also learned the value of volunteering to gain Canadian experience. “Because of that, I’m now about to start volunteering with a legal aid organization in Vancouver,” Terry shares excitedly.
Reflecting on her journey, one message stands out:
“I learned that I didn’t have to limit myself while working toward my bigger goal,” she says.
Terry’s story is a reminder that progress is built step by step, with the right guidance and support along the way.
DIVERSEcity’s Future Leaders is a free, innovative youth employment program that will prepare jobseekers aged 15-30 for career success. We’re now accepting applications for our next session, starting April 27, 2026.
