Grade 12 student James Yin elevates the importance of financial literacy while giving back to the community
Making a difference in your community can take many forms. For Surrey-based Southridge School Grade 12 student James Yin, it starts with a desire to do something good for others, including a recent $1,000 donation to DIVERSEcity Community Resources Society.
He made the donation on behalf of Trive Investment Competition, an international student competition he founded.
A financial enthusiast, James recently hosted the competition with the goal of empowering his peers in Canada and abroad. “The aim of the competition is to allow kids to understand more about financial literacy. I think it’s very important for kids to understand something that’s not usually taught in schools all that often.”
James came to DIVERSEcity recently with his mother, Cindy, to present the donation in person.
“I really support DIVERSEcity’s causes,” he says. “As an immigrant myself, who came [to Canada] with my mom, I think what you guys do here is amazing for immigrants and it’s a cause I want to support and aligns with the goal of my competition.”
From all of us at DIVERSEcity, thank you to James, an incredible Canadian youth who exemplifies the spirit of philanthropy.
The donation will be used for DIVERSEcity’s Support Fund, which supports emergent and urgent needs of the people we serve, including newcomers, refugees, survivors of gender-based violence, youth, seniors and people facing food insecurity.
