It’s National Volunteer Week in the International Volunteer Year 2026, and we’re celebrating our volunteers at DIVERSEcity
This National Volunteer Week (April 19–25, 2026), we’re celebrating the ways people “ignite volunteerism” — the theme of the United Nations International Volunteer Year 2026. Today, we want to spotlight DIVERSEcity volunteer Moema Pinheiro, who has contributed her time and energy to many of our events and programs.
Originally from Brazil, Moema understands that moving to a new country is a journey filled with both hope and hurdles.
“Being a new immigrant in a new country was very difficult,” says Moema. “I remember how overwhelming it felt at times to navigate systems that were completely new to me. That personal experience stayed with me and became a strong motivation to give back.”
She adds that she wants to “help others feel less alone in their journey” and contribute to an organization that actively works to empower others.
One of her most cherished experiences was her work with the Delta Local Immigration Partnership, where she was able to turn her past challenges into a tool for future change.
Moema recalls: “It was meaningful to sit at the table and not only listen but also contribute to discussions about identifying gaps in services and exploring ways to better connect people with resources. This felt very close to home, as many of the challenges discussed reflected my own experiences as an immigrant. It was special to share my story and perspectives and to feel that the group was really interested in listening to me and understanding the struggles.”
Through her dedication, Moema reminds us that our personal histories are often our greatest assets when it comes to building a more inclusive community.
