At the heart of Surrey, something special is growing at the Hazelnut Meadows Community Garden.
Managed by DIVERSEcity, on City of Surrey land and generously supported by the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation (TD FEF), this garden is more than a plot of land — it’s a place of learning, healing and connection.
Designed with newcomers, refugees and low-income families in mind, the garden provides access to fresh, culturally relevant produce while teaching hands-on skills in sustainable gardening. Participants not only grow food, but also confidence and resilience, equipping themselves with tools for healthier and more self-reliant futures.
The garden also brings people from different culture backgrounds together in community. Here, they gather to share stories, exchange knowledge and create friendships that cross language and borders.

In this peaceful, nature-based space, stress eases, laughter grows and belonging takes root.
As one participant shared, “this garden reminds me of home — but also helps me feel at home here.”
