The Strengthening Safety Award holds special meaning at DIVERSEcity. It’s connected to our work in creating safe spaces for some of the most vulnerable in our community, including survivors of gender-based violence. As changemakers, we believe that when we aim to make a difference for others, we must do so with open hearts and minds.
Sponsored by Jane Shin in honour of her mother, Myung-Bok Lee, this award recognizes those who make our communities safer — not only through protection, but through compassion, courage and inclusion.
This year’s recipient, Alex Sangha, embodies that mission through his work as the founder of Sher Vancouver, a registered charity offering support, mentorship and advocacy for LGBTQ+ South Asians and their allies. What began as a small peer support group has grown into a vital organization that provides community, belonging and hope to those who need it most.
“Leadership is a calling,” Alex shared during his heartfelt acceptance speed. “I remember when Sher Vancouver was getting funding, people said no one is going to support a gay, Sikh, South Asian organization. But my mom said, ‘In the face of adversity, you have to be courageous. I believe in you and support you.’ Eighteen years later, here we are.”
A social worker and nationally recognized human-rights advocate, Alex has dedicated his life to building bridges where divisions once stood — redefining what safety means through dignity, empathy, empowerment and love. His story reminds us that safety isn’t simply the absence of harm, but the presence of belonging and care.
Thank you to Jane Shin, sponsor of the Strengthening Safety Award for presenting the award.
