Gender-based Violence Services at DIVERSEcity Community Resources Society in Surrey and Delta
November 25 is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, the first of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.
Nearly 30 per cent of women in BC have experienced physical or sexual violence from an intimate partner. United Nations statistics also point to one in three women experiencing violence globally. And many cases go unreported.
This violence is rooted in gender inequality, both as a cause and a consequence. It’s intensified by other systemic inequalities; the rates of intimate partner violence are higher for 2SLBGTQ+, Indigenous women, women living in poverty and with disabilities.
There is still such a long way to go to end family violence, so it’s up to everyone to speak up, come together and act to end gender-based violence. Everyone has a role in saying it’s enough.
Help for gender-based violence survivors at DIVERSEcity
For survivors who need help, DIVERSEcity’s Gender-Based Violence Services are here to support you in your healing journey. “We have trained counsellors who speak several languages can be your guide with our free, compassionate and confidential services,” says Golnoosh Hakiman, a counsellor with DIVERSEcity, who leads the organization’s innovative Roots of Safety service planning approach.
Golnoosh explains that Roots of Safety is trauma-informed and culturally relevant approach that recognizes “your unique circumstances, cultural background, past traumatic experiences and other barriers or stigma. Together, we look at the challenges or conflicts you’re facing. We then focus on exploring your strengths and creating an empowerment plan that is right for your safety and family,” she adds.
“Everyone has the right to live free from abuse and fear.”
